Sick Visit Q & A

When should I schedule a sick visit?

It’s generally a good idea to schedule a sick visit when your child has pain or other symptoms that aren’t going away with home care and rest. This is especially important if you have a baby or young child or if your child has existing health issues.

The Westside Pediatrics team recommends scheduling a sick visit for symptoms like:

  • High fever
  • Skin rashes
  • Open wounds
  • Unexplained pain
  • Breathing difficulties

If your child isn’t feeling well and you’re unsure if they need medical attention, contact the practice for recommendations about scheduling a sick visit.

What conditions can be treated during a sick visit?

The Westside Pediatrics team offers comprehensive diagnostic care and treatment services for both acute and chronic pediatric conditions. During a sick visit, they can assess new or existing conditions like:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Eczema
  • Earaches
  • Skin rashes
  • Colds and flu
  • Cuts and wounds
  • Gastrointestinal issues

The team provides care for a variety of bacterial infections, including skin infections and urinary tract infections. The Westside Pediatrics staff can also evaluate and treat the side effects of moderate-to-severe acne, such as skin inflammation and pain, to prevent infections and other complications.

What can I expect during a same-day sick visit?

To determine the root cause of your child’s symptoms, the team performs a thorough physical exam and reviews your child’s medical history. They discuss when the symptoms started and what treatments you used at home.

Once your Westside Pediatrics provider diagnoses your child’s condition, they create a treatment plan tailored to alleviating acute symptoms and preventing the worsening of the condition.

For bacterial infections, your child may need a course of antibiotics to clear the infection. If the infection is the result of a virus, your provider can recommend home care and over-the-counter medicines to keep your child comfortable.

If your child’s illness relates to asthma or allergies, the Westside Pediatrics team provides on-site treatments and prescribes medication for both short-term and long-term relief of symptoms.

Treating skin rashes and chronic conditions like eczema often require topical and oral medications. For acne, your Westside Pediatrics provider also uses the Isolaz® laser technology to address chronic acne symptoms. This system cleans out the pores, relieving existing acne symptoms and preventing future acne outbreaks.

Your provider can determine if your child needs follow-up care for symptoms that result from a chronic health issue. They discuss your options for treating your child’s condition, so you can make the most informed decisions about your child’s health.

If your child needs a medical evaluation for pain or other new symptoms, please call our office to schedule an appointment.
